How Do I Afford My Lifestyle?

I was asked by a friend how I afforded my lifestyle, and it made me think exactly what sort of lifestyle he thought I led, and why.

On May 2nd I’ll be competing in the 3rd Himalayan XC Marathon organised by the guys at Running and Living. In short this means that I’ll be taking a week out of my life to run 13 miles (21 km) up a mountain in the Indian Himalayas before turning around and running 13 miles back down again.

Go Talk to the Buddha – Goals and Goal Planning for 2014

As you get older the years seem to fly by faster and faster, and if you listen to your elders you’ll know that feeling only gets worse. I turn 30 this year – I don’t want to turn 40 and wonder where the last 10 years went, so I plan ahead. Knowing who, what, and where you want to be in the future and how you plan to get there requires thought and effort. Annual plans and reviews are a great way to start.

2014 – a New Year for New Beginnings

I began to understand, in a profound way that is hard to articulate, that old idea that change starts within us, and then around us, and that the saying “be the change you want to see” is not some trite little quote that we should raise a cynical eyebrow to. This little seed that was planted up on the mountain has grown into a firm, plucky little sapling that is still putting down roots and stretching it’s young branches out toward the sunlight.

Janapar: Love on a Bike [Film Review]

One of the main reasons we go on adventures – especially big, long, solo adventures – is to find ourselves. Through challenge, adversity, and loneliness, we get to see what we’re really made of. Through loneliness, time, and distance from home and from the person who friends and family have come to expect us to be, we can find perspective and move a little bit closer toward our own truths.

Three Degrees at Once – How I Hacked My Adult Education

I want to talk about education and study, because it’s a subject that nicely pulls together a lot of things relevant to the purpose of this blog:

1) Awesome, invigorating, potentially life-changing, mind-expanding intellectual ideas and experiences – GOOD!

2) Tyrannical propagation of doctrines, social structures, and behaviour and the cruel destruction of self-belief, creativity and ambition in most people – BAD!

3) Fantastic opportunities to ‘hack’ the system and choose alternative paths than what we are generally offered – AWESOME!

Rubbish, Running, and Purpose

Man, that was a lame post! Did anyone finish it? That last one about Beginning. Pretentious title too. Such an interesting and useful topic, but such a boring and useless post!

As wide a set of goal posts as I have set myself, I am here to talk about something I have vaguely defined as alternative lifestyle design, not prattle on abut how useless I was at travelling when I was a kid. I’m still bloody useless at it today but except for the hilariously stupid things I sometimes do I wouldn’t dream of forcing you to read about any of it!

I would take that post out back and put it out of it’s misery but, well, let is serve as a reminder to me never to write crap just for the sake of writing something. A reminder and a lesson. Because why did I write it? Because I forgot my purpose here.
